From Hope to History: The knicks Historic Championship run

Every great championship story begins with hope.  For the New York Knicks, that hope was carried by generations of fans waiting for the Knicks to reclaim glory after a 53-year drought.  In 2026, that hope transformed into history as the knicks completed a historic run that will be remembered forever.  Their journey to the top was defined by tons of resilience, unforgettable moments and a team determined to make history.

The journey to the top did not happen overnight and it took years built through unselfish acts by Jalen Brunson. In the summer of 2024, Jalen Brunson turned down what was expected a 5 year, 269-million-dollar max deal, and then signed a 4 year 156.5 million dollar deal instead. This left 113 million dollars on the table for the front office to surround him with assets. Also, since Brunson took the pay cut, the Knicks avoided the second apron rules which if they crossed the financial line, the league would have frozen the remaining draft picks. This essentially means that the league would have not let the Knicks trade their picks. This is important because they used 7 first round picks to construct a championship team.  With the cap space and picks, they brought in Karl Anthony Towns, trade and lock up for Mikal Bridges, extend OG Anunoby and get Josh Hart. This was the supporting cast Brunson needed to get a championship in the 2024-25 season.

So, under the coaching of Tom Thibodeau, he had a masterclass of a team to get to the championship. Backed by Jalen Brunson’s sacrifice, the front office decided its future to surround the point guard with star players. However, his signature coaching style of rigidity and refusing to play the bench failed to maximize the elite offensive talent. He would play the starters 40 plus minutes a game which left them fatigued when it came playoff time.  Thibodeau built a team that lacked a collaborative, modern approach needed to drive a super team. A prime example is when they made it to the Conference Finals against the Indiana Pacers and the pacers abused the pick and roll to target KAT on defense. Instead of changing his rigid defense to protect Towns, he benched him. With the top players fatigued and injured, the pacers closed them out in 6 games. This led the front office to fire him, and the year could be considered as a wasted year. They hired Mike Brown, a 2-time coach of the year, to lead the super team Tom could not.

Under Mike Brown’s modern approach, the Knicks wasted no time making a statement. They finished the regular season 53-29, earning the third seed in the conference.  The difference between the coaching was noticeable as brown kept the stars fresh using his bench effectively and adjusted when needed. This helped the team succeed and the results showed as they won the NBA cup beating the spurs. Jalen Brunson was named the NBA cup MVP averaging 33.2 points a game. This was a sign of big things to come soon.

When the playoffs began, nobody could have predicted what was going to happen. The knicks found themselves down 2-1 in the first round against the Atlanta Hawks and MSG faithful was losing hope. Then, it clicked, and the Knicks went on a 13-game win streak sweeping the Philadelphia 76ers and the Cleveland Cavaliers to reach the NBA finals for first time since 1999. Waiting in the Finals matchup was the San Antonio spurs with 7’4 phenom Victor Wembanyama. This was the same team that beat the Knicks in 1999, the last time the Knicks played in the Finals. What was also waiting was one of the most jaw dropping finals series in history. In all 4 of their championship wins, they erased double digit leads, going 6-2 in all the playoffs. Real magic happened in game 4 as the Spurs were winning by 29 points and it was expected that the series would be tied at 2-2.  However, with a 0.4 percent chance to win, they defied the odds and took a commanding 3-1 lead.  Every single game of the finals was within five points in the final 5 minutes making it a very clutch series. It comes in handy when you have the 2024-2025 clutch player of the year, Jalen Brunson as he propelled his team to a 4-1 series win.  In the game 5 clincher, Brunson dropped 45 points to carry New York to its first championship in 53 years. When the fans and players were partying, we can see that the number tell the real historic story. In all their postseason wins, they outscored their opponents by 289 points, with their 3 losses being combined just 6 points. Also, the knicks outscored their opponents by 14.9 points per game which is the best point differential in NBA playoff history. The drought was over, and the fans were able to celebrate a well-deserved championship.

In the 2025-2026 season, the knicks proved that championships are not given, they are built. This year’s champions were built through sacrifice, resilience, and determination.  The team was built on Brunson’s selfless pay cut, smart roster construction, and a change in coaching that unlocked that super team, this was a team waiting for a moment.  From the historic comeback performances to the most clutch finals series in modern NBA history, every piece of the historic run meant something meaningful. The city of New York had its moment and for a fanbase that waited a lifetime, it was worth every year.
